Hunter Family Diary 1928

This blog contains the 1928 Diary of my mother, Iris Hunter and her sister Nora Hunter. At the time of it's writing, they were attending Bournemouth High School, a boarding school for girls in Bournemouth, England. It was their final year after which they would be returning to their home in Shanghai, China. Iris turned 17 in Feb of that year and her sister would be 16 in July. I've transcribed it as written along with any photos that were pasted into the diary. I've also added in a few photos

August 30

30 Thursday (243-123)

Went shopping in Oxford Street, bought an afternoon frock each to keep for landing in, in Shanghai.

Bought some pairs of shoes and two hats.
Met Hilda at 11:30 and continued our shopping with her. She had to leave us at 12:45. We packed all afternoon and after tea went out to do some odd shopping round about Whiteley's. After dinner we packed our trunks until about 11 PM and then retired to bed and read a chapter of my book "Dorothy Vernon"

Dress for landing in! They'd have been horrified at today's shorts and flipflops. I think I need to read Dorothy Vernon. Whiteleys is getting closer to Notting Hill, they'll be on my old doorstep soon. Where were they staying in London?

They probably stayed at the Bedford Hotel near Russell Square. It was close to everything and they had stayed there before on other trips. It was also close to Ormond Street Hospital and that could have been where Hilda was nursing. It would have been walking distance to many of the shops etc
