May 29

29 Tuesday (150-216)

Nora and I got up at 6:45 AM and had breakfast at 7:15. We left for school at 7:40 AM and arrived at school in very good time 8:25 AM. Miss Haskell was quite shocked to see us so early. After seeing Nora into school I went to Miss Blanchard to give her my material. I chose some nice patterns so the dresses should be nice. After tiffin we all went into Bournemouth and I bought a new summer coat and hat. The coat is a light gray and quite pretty and so is the hat, though it's rather jazzy. Daddy went to try on his suit and Belle bought some new shoes. We booked seats for "The Letter" next Saturday after "Thark", as Gladys Cooper is the actress in it, so we mustn't miss seeing her.

I.H.

Note: Gladys Cooper, Actress 1888-1971

Her first play in sole charge, was to be another Somerset Maugham play called "The Letter" which, including a tour of the play, ran for sixty weeks and made a profit of forty thousand pounds from an initial investment of four hundred pounds.  But this was a success Gladys would be unable to repeat as tougher times were ahead.  During the production of "The Letter" Frank Curzon died.
