This blog contains the 1928 Diary of my mother, Iris Hunter and her sister Nora Hunter. At the time of it's writing, they were attending Bournemouth High School, a boarding school for girls in Bournemouth, England. It was their final year after which they would be returning to their home in Shanghai, China. Iris turned 17 in Feb of that year and her sister would be 16 in July. I've transcribed it as written along with any photos that were pasted into the diary. I've also added in a few photos

18 Tuesday (262-104)
Today is daddy's birthday, As we are now in port we can't celebrate it.
We went ashore in the morning and did some shopping.
Next we went by tram to the famous marble shop and had a look at their sculpture. It was magnificent, especially the one of the mermaid in a shell. There was a green light inside which gave it the colour of sea-green. After that we did some more shopping. Iris bought some carnations for daddy's birthday party. We also bought a silk shawl each. They were worth 34/- and 38/-
The boat left at 5:30 p.m. and all were glad to be at sea once more. We had a calm sea luckily! About 40 new passengers joined us.

We went to Cook's at 9:30 a.m.and took a Charie for Rapallo etc. The other family of Hunters and Mrs Gomersall were also with us. The trip was really worth it. We went along the coast to the Lido, Pieve, Santa Margherita, Portofino and Rapallo. At the latter we had lunch ( Hotel Savoy ) The meal was good. From there we went on to Paradiso Gardens and had a magnificent view through a telescope of the towns on the Eastern Riviera. After that we returned to Cook's, then had tea in a restaurant. Then we returned to the ship.

15th after Trinity Ember Week
We arrived at Genoa at 7 p.m. and managed to get into the harbour. We went ashore after dinner. We walked a little and then returned by tram. We saw the Savoy Majestic.
It was strange to be on land again after so many days at sea.
Our legs felt funny. The earth below us seemed a bit too steady. We returned to our ship at about 10:30 p.m. and were ready to retire to bed.

Jewish Year 5689 begins
S.R 6.34, S.S. 7.16
This is the day before we arrive at Genoa and so we are giving a grand Ball in honor of the passengers leaving at Genoa.
It really was a Grand Ball. The dining room was decorated with streamers and the deck with flags and coloured lights. It was beautifully done.
The dance lasted from 9-11:30. The band was splendid and we all enjoyed ourselves. We had refreshments of biscuits and ice cream and sandwiches brought round. The photographer took a group of us all. Nora had a dance with the Captain. The dance was a success!

S.R. 6.23, S.S. 7.21
After breakfast we went to Muller's to enquire about the arrival of the "Saarbrucken" and what time she leaves. Did some shopping and Nora bought a shower proof coat.
We boarded the boat at about 12:45 and after seeing our baggage into our cabins we went into lunch. The ship looks very nice and comfortable and I think we'll enjoyed the trip on her. We sit at a table with the Purser and two other people. We have already got our deck chairs and bath times so we are fairly settled in. We have explored part of the boat but have not seen everything by any means. We haven't met the other Hunters yet. We received a telegram from Nora and Flo and also a letter from Hilda and Belle.
I.H.
* NOTE: I've italicized the mention of the "other Hunters" because it's still a mystery as to who they were and what their relationship was to my family. They are mentioned twice more, on the voyage.
I have been unable to obtain a passenger list for the "SS Saarbrucken" so if any readers are able to offer any suggestions as to where I might look, please DO!
