The arrival of the "SS Saarbrucken" at Shanghai on October 27, 1928 effectively marked the end of Iris and Nora Hunter's diary.
As of this writing I've still been unable to track down a passenger list for this ship. I have searched shipping news in newspapers and even got so far as a list of the ships that arrived in Shanghai that very day. The SS Saarbrucken was omitted and yet she is listed outbound two days later with a list of passengers continuing on to northern ports. I have tried to discover who the "other Hunters" were and whether or not they were related to us. They are mentioned on three occasions; the first day at sea, the shore trip in Genoa, Italy, and the car tour in Colombo, Ceylon. I assume they were probably in the group photos, and would also have been included at my grandfather's birthday dinner aboard ship on Sept 19th. They did not seem to be a part of the landing group at Shanghai, which could have just been an oversight as other friends were aboard and also not mentioned. So, there are still some remaining mysteries.
There was a couple more entries in the diary in December, which I will post just to complete the diary record as it was written. There are a few names mentioned in the last entries, that I'm still attempting to relate in case they shed light on other unanswered questions.
I hope those of you who read this will excuse the boring bits and enjoy a glimpse into the somewhat privileged lives of my mother and her sister.
Thanks for reading.

This blog contains the 1928 Diary of my mother, Iris Hunter and her sister Nora Hunter. At the time of it's writing, they were attending Bournemouth High School, a boarding school for girls in Bournemouth, England. It was their final year after which they would be returning to their home in Shanghai, China. Iris turned 17 in Feb of that year and her sister would be 16 in July. I've transcribed it as written along with any photos that were pasted into the diary. I've also added in a few photos

Nora Eileen Hunter
Ten years ago today, Oct 1, 2007, my aunt, Nora Eileen Hunter, passed away at the age of 95 in Laguna Hills, California. Along with my mother Iris, she is responsible for writing the diary transcribed in this blog.
This photo is the only one I have of her at a very young age and shows her with her father taken in Hong Kong about age 5. It would have been taken almost exactly 100 years ago.
Coincidentally, I was going through old photos and was posting a photo of her mother ( my grandmother ) on another genealogy website when I realized that the scan of that other photo was done just after my aunt passed away. That jogged my memory and made me notice today was the 10th anniversary of Nora's death.
I've had coincidences involving much of my research. I can't count the number of times I've come across new information, right on the birth date of the person I'm looking into, or on some other date that is pertinent to them. I've come to view it as my own method of connect-ability.
So today, I'll remember my aunt Nora even more than on other days. Following along and posting the entries from this diary has given me an incredible connection to Nora and to my mother and grandfather as well. I'm very grateful to them for taking the time to write their thoughts, and most of all, to Nora for preserving the book all those years, enabling it to be shared today.

Today is daddy's birthday, As we are now in port we can't celebrate it.
We went ashore in the morning and did some shopping.
Next we went by tram to the famous marble shop and had a look at their sculpture. It was magnificent, especially the one of the mermaid in a shell. There was a green light inside which gave it the colour of sea-green. After that we did some more shopping. Iris bought some carnations for daddy's birthday party. We also bought a silk shawl each. They were worth 34/- and 38/-
The boat left at 5:30 p.m. and all were glad to be at sea once more. We had a calm sea luckily! About 40 new passengers joined us.

The dance lasted from 9-11:30. The band was splendid and we all enjoyed ourselves. We had refreshments of biscuits and ice cream and sandwiches brought round. The photographer took a group of us all. Nora had a dance with the Captain. The dance was a success!

After breakfast we went to Muller's to enquire about the arrival of the "Saarbrucken" and what time she leaves. Did some shopping and Nora bought a shower proof coat.
We boarded the boat at about 12:45 and after seeing our baggage into our cabins we went into lunch. The ship looks very nice and comfortable and I think we'll enjoyed the trip on her. We sit at a table with the Purser and two other people. We have already got our deck chairs and bath times so we are fairly settled in. We have explored part of the boat but have not seen everything by any means. We haven't met the other Hunters yet. We received a telegram from Nora and Flo and also a letter from Hilda and Belle.
I.H.
* NOTE: I've italicized the mention of the "other Hunters" because it's still a mystery as to who they were and what their relationship was to my family. They are mentioned twice more, on the voyage.
I have been unable to obtain a passenger list for the "SS Saarbrucken" so if any readers are able to offer any suggestions as to where I might look, please DO!

We then went to "Southhampton Row" to meet

We left at 3:20 and came straight home to do a bit of packing.
We played the gramophone for the rest of the evening.
Wrote to Flo and a man in the bus offered to post it for me as I had forgotten to do so.

29 Wednesday (242-124)
Jimmy came at 9:30 AM to spend the day with us. We tried to go for a chara-banc drive to Canterbury but finally took a steamer trip up the Thames as far is Richmond. We had lunch at Lyons there, and then came back to Madame Tussauds to see the wax works exhibition. The new building has changed for the better and everything looks much cleaner.
There was a great crowd there owing to a heavy downpour of rain. They have a restaurant and cinema attached to Madame Tussauds which is a very good thing. We had tea at ABC's and then returned home. Jimmy stayed to dinner and went home about 10 PM, when we retired to bed after our day touring the London by bus.

Went by underground to High St, Kensington to do our shopping. Went into Pontings and Derry & Toms, but found nothing to our liking.
We went to "Barkers" and Nora bought two morning frocks and I bought one. On our way home we stopped at "Bennett's" and Nora bought a navy coat (summer) We saw quite a good selection of dresses there so will go again another day. We read our books until 4 PM when Miss Skipton arrived for tea.
She could not stay to dinner but is coming some other night instead. We saw her to the underground and then met Belle and daddy and went for a walk through the Palace Gardens in Kensington Gardens. The gardens were just wonderful and so were the terraces of Sycamore trees. Went to see "The City of Pleasure" at the Marble Arch Pavilion.

Stayed in until 11:30 a.m. then we went for a walk to Hyde ark and Kensington Gardens. We had ice cream sodas in Hyde Park. We looked for the Peter Pan statue but could not find it, but in any case it was not to be seen as it was being cleaned up after that outrage done to it the other day when somebody covered it with tar and feathers.
At 2 p.m. Hilda came round to spend the afternoon and evening with us

*Note:
Kensington Gardens was not a happy place on 22 August 1928. A newspaper account of the time describes "Children, with their lips pouting sadly and with tears in their eyes". The object of their lamentation was the much-cherished statue of Peter Pan. Overnight, someone had poured a pail of tar over the bronze boy's head, then whimsically garnished it with cushion feathers.
The press reveled in the 'outrage', gathering broken-hearted comments and mawkish reactions from a devastated public.
"Poor Peter," one little fair-haired child exclaimed, "all in the dark, where he can't see the birds, and the water and everything".
"If I knew who had done it, I would smack them," shouted a little boy in a sailor suit, holding a model yacht in his arms."Where are my bunny rabbits and the little mice!" a tiny girl demanded [referring to the animals decorating the base]. "I always come and say good morning to them. May I make sure they're still there? I want to tell them I'll be back tomorrow."
Peter's "grotesque appearance" was soon shrouded from public gaze by a tarpaulin. Immediately, men set to work with knives, paraffin and other implements. The statue took two days to clean, and traces of the tar lingered even then. Dorothy Dickson, an actor who'd recently played Peter Pan on stage, commented: "It is the most stupid thing I have ever heard of. I cannot imagine what reason anyone could have for such a silly piece of vandalism. The only conclusion I can come to is that whoever did it must be a lunatic."

At 10:30 we all went to the hairdresser's. At 11:30 we went downtown. Iris bought a blouse. We met daddy later and went to the headland near the "Hotel Bristol" After lunch we went by bus to Mawgan.
We only had 1/2 hour there and thus did not have time to see much of the village.
2:30 p.m.
We walked via the R. Gannel to Crantock. The scenery was beautiful. On our way it began to rain but it soon cleared up again. We went into Crantock Church.
It was very quaint and worth seeing. The screen had a very fine line of figures on it carved in wood. There was an old font dating back to the 14th century and also an old stone coffin. In the churchyard on the N. side we saw a pair of stocks which had previously been used in the village. Crossed over by ferry.

Bank Holiday
Today was a very full day for us. We went to add in the hole this morning and found it disappointing. They charged us about a pound before we knew where we were. It was 3/6 entrance.
After tea, Nora and I had a single on the hard courts and later on we had a set with two other ladies.
Tonight we attended the large dance held here. We had a fine Orchestra playing for us so it helped and making our dance enjoyable. We had two "Paul Jones" and also a dance where the ladies had to ask the gentleman being leap year.
We danced every dance until 1 o'clock. We had refreshments at 11 o'clock. Daddy played bridge while we were at the dance. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and we're dead tired when we got to bed. The Houfes went back to Hull this morning.

9th After Trinity
We went into breakfast and met some very nice people
there at our table. A Mr. and Mrs. Houfe and their son and two other ladies. We
have an excellent waiter who just spins around us and is all attention to our
wants. The quickest and cleanest waiter I've ever seen. He is also the baths
assistant. We went for a bus ride round about here and enjoyed it thoroughly. At
3 PM we played tennis with Nora and Flo, our two ladies at our table. At supper
we had a good chat with the Houfes about Hull and various places of
interest.
After dinner we all attended the concert and
community singing. That ended at 10:15 and we didn't go to bed until 11 o'clock
because of our interesting talk at the bottom of the stairs.

War declared on Germany, 1914
S.R. 5.27, S.S. 8.43
We went to the Pump Gardens at Leamington spa to listen to the band. After tiffin we left for Matlock. Our first stop was at Coventry where we got into a very crowded train for Birmingham. At the Birmingham we had a long wait so we went to tea in the town. We looked at the shops, but unfortunately somewhere closed, it being Saturday afternoon. We had to wait a long time for the train to Derby. At Derby we had another long wait of and hour and a 3/4 giving us time to see the town by tram.
At last we arrived at Matlock and came
straight to the Hotel Chatsworth Hydro. We found a dance going on, so joined in
and danced until 11 o'clock. So every night so far, we've stayed up late.
I.H.
*Note:
It was renamed Chatsworth Hydro, claiming in 1920 that it had "absolutely the finest position in Matlock" and in 1926 "The Cosiest of all Hydros" advertised suites to attract permanent residents]. Mr. and Mrs. Francis Taylor had been the owners for some years, with Mrs. Taylor acting as the manageress. Mr. Taylor had business interests in both Stockport and Manchester and when he died in 1928 it was said that he had been associated with Matlock Hydros for many years. His wife died less than two months later and Chatsworth was put up for auction, though did not sell immediately. By 1932 it was under both new ownership and management.

Chatsworth continued as a hydro until the Second World War when
C&A Modes, a Manchester textile firm, took it over (although it was still
advertising as a hydro in Kelly's 1941 Directory). It reopened briefly as a
hydro post war but was bought by Derbyshire County Council, along with
Rockside, and a number of large houses in the vicinity. The sale was finalised
seven months after the Council had bought Rockside. They paid £17,000 for
Chatsworth. These buildings became the newly formed Matlock Teacher Training
College, a highly respected institution in the town. Unfortunately for Matlock,
the students moved to the Derby in 1988 when the Derby and Matlock Colleges
amalgamated.

3 Friday (216-150)
We spent this morning in shopping. We bought a pair of silver shoes each and Iris bought a sandal styled pair as well. After lunch we took the 2:15 bus for Stratford and arrived about 3:30. There was a fair on there. First we went to Anne Hathaway's cottage. We had to cross a field to get to it. The cottage was well preserved and very unique.
We ate our sandwiches on our return to Stratford. Then we had a nice each. Next we went to Holy Trinity Church and saw Shakespeare's burial place. His tomb was placed in the church thus showing he had some importance attached to him. Paid 6d entrance. Next saw grammar school from outside and went to River. Went for a trip 2 miles up river. Magnificent views. Swans tame. Had tea and cakes. Went to see "Midsummer Night's Dream". Wonderfully good. Scenery good. Returned 12 PM

2 Thursday (215-151)
The first thing we did this morning was to go to Randall's. Iris bought a pair of gray shoes. Then we took a "Red" Midlands bus and went Kenilsworth. From there we walk to the castle. On the way we had to cross a ford. It was fun! We paid 6d entrance fee and 2 /- for a guide. We saw the ruins of the castle but there was one part restored in which there were occupants.
There were three distinct types of architecture; Norman, Gothic and Tudor. The castle belonged to Lord Leicester, Elizabeth's favorite. Then we returned to our hotel. After tiffin we went by tram to Warwick and walked to Guy's Cliffe. Guy lived there as a hermit. We saw his cell and also an old Chapel built on rock. There was a figure of the giant Guy. We also visited stables, hewn out of the rock. Then we returned. We had tea at the "Pump Rooms. Then we went to Stratford and saw "Hamlet" it was wonderful he acted. Arrived back at 12 pm

Lammas Day (Scottish Quarter Day)
Full Moon. 4.31 p.m.
We went by tram to Warwick Castle. The walk up to the castle was very inviting. The castle and grounds were well-kept. A guide took us around. We saw the Armory Hall, Red Drawing Room, Green Drawing Room, Cedar Room and Queen Anne's State Room.
The rooms were very interesting. The Boule work was especially good. Each painting was lighted with an electric bulb. This was quite unique. We saw some good paintings by Rubens Raphael and VanDyk. Then we saw Guy's Porridge Pot. The view from the Blue Room was remarkable. We saw the fork of the Avon and a view of the old mill below and fields all round. Also saw the Warwick Vase. Then we saw St Mary's church and the Lord Leicester's Hospital Chapel. In the afternoon we went in a charabanc to Stratford-on-Avon and it rained. Had tea at River Café. Saw Shakespeare's birthplace, returned via Warwick at 6:30 PM. Went to see "It Pays to Advertise"

Had breakfast at 8:30 AM. More people at hotel this morning. Nora and I went shopping until 10 AM then we wrote a few letters went out for a short walk. We went to Euston station and caught the 11:30 AM train for Coventry, where we had to change for Leamington. There were a few passengers in the train. We tried for rooms at the Regent, but couldn't get rooms so we came to the Manor House Hotel, a historical sort of building and I think we have a very nice room here. After tea we went for a walk about Leamington and saw some very nice shops. We bought a doll hat to send to Mary. We enquired about a theater here also and about Charabanc drives. Had exactly the same dinner as last night only not half as good and for nearly twice the money.

We finished all our packing after tiffin and then wrote letters. After tea we went for a short walk to the crossroads but it pelted with rain so we had to turn back. We leave tomorrow for London and then's on with our tour. Thrills!!!

26 Thursday (208-158)
Today's a great day!! when Nora left school for good. She had one more exam and then after that came the breaking up for the holidays. Daddy and I went to fetch her and we said goodbye to some of the girls and Haskel. We then went up to Fullingers to see about my OG blazer and also to fit Nora with one. We had an early supper and went to see "Yellow Sands". We met Inez, Alwyn and Goodwin there as was arranged. We all enjoyed the show and it was certainly funny. Goodwin drove us all home and we had a light refreshment and talked, Goodwin played some jazz music on the piano. Inez and Alwyn leave for Jersey tomorrow so we won't see them again for sometime.

25 Wednesday ( 207-159)
S. James
Belle went to a garden party with Mrs Kennedy and Daddy and I went on the top of the tram to Christchurch and down by the river there.
After supper we went round to Mrs Russell`s and she took us up to see her new house. It was very dark so we couldn't see much except the faint outline of the house.
It was beautifully cool walking on the cliffs this evening.

24 Tuesday (206-160)
First Quarter, 3.38 p.m.
Daddy and I went shopping at Boscombe this morning to buy bathing caps. I couldn't get one to fit so I had to order one. Inez and Alwyn were to come up to bathe, but in the end they couldn't, but they did come to have Chinese dinner. They enjoyed the chow I believe. After dinner we danced out in the garden as it was so hot.
Belle's badminton set arrived today and we put it up. We three bathed this afternoon and the water was gloriously warm. We are arranged to meet the Cocks and a Goodwin on Thursday in the Theater Lougne. It's been a glorious fine day.

Daddy and I went to the cinema this afternoon to see "White Gold" It was a thoroughly boring film and we came out before the middle of the picture.
I went shopping after seeing Nora to school, to try and buy a bathing costume, but couldn't find one to my liking.

22 Sunday ( 204-162)
7th after Trinity
After tiffin we went down on the beach to bathe. The Wrights came to tea and dinner and also bathed with us. It was lovely in the water today and we bathed twice.
We had a fine Chinese dinner which everyone enjoyed.
We played the gramophone until the Wrights left us.
They had to go quite early as the trams stop earlier on Sundays.

S.R. 5.7 S.S. 9.5
Today is the BHS speech day and we three are to attend. It is also Eunice's birthday so we are taking her a present this afternoon. Nora went to the dentist. We arrived just in time for the speeches. We had tea at St. George's and afterwards went to see the entertainment. It was a very good show and I think "A Visit to London, 1815" was the most amusing.
We looked over the cooking exhibition and all the things were already sold.
We went down to see Nelly Wallace in "Love and Money"
She was quite good but the show wasn't up to much.

I went to fetch my overcoat this morning and we bought some new records too,
We took Inez with us to see "The Acquital" at the Theatre Royal. It was a ripping show and most thrilling and well plotted.

July 18 Nora's 16th Birthday
18 Wednesday (200-166)
Went early this morning to fetch Inez out for the day. I arrived at St. George's in time to wish Nora a happy birthday before school. At 11 o'clock the Charabanc came to take us to Winchester. There were only three others in the car besides us, so it was rather a dull trip on the whole. We had tiffin at Dumper's Café at Winchester, the same place where we at tiffin in 1924. Went over the Cathedral. At Ramsey we went over the Abbey and had an ice at "Dumpers Café" there also. We had tea at Lyndhurst and then came home. Inez stayed for dinner and daddy and Belle took her back home afterwards. I went to bed early.

6th after Trinity
Daddy and Belle went bathing this morning while Nor and i packed one trunk at home.
At about 3 PM we went down to the Wright's for tea. We stayed for supper too, and nearly missed the last tram back.
Today has been the hottest day I've known in England for ages!*
It was really boiling hot!
I.H.
*Note: July 1928- Very sunny and rather warm with below average rainfall.
There was some changeable and rather cool weather during the early part of July. More than 16 mm of rain was recorded on the 3rd, and the maximum temperature on the 6th was only 18.2°C. During the second week it became largely dry, sunny and warm, and this summery spell of weather lasted, almost without interruption, until the last few days of the month. There was unbroken sunshine on both the 13th and 14th; and the temperature on the 15th exceeded 30°C.

Nora
went to the dentist this morning and I went shopping to buy cakes for this
afternoon's tea party. Straight after tiffin I went to fetch six girls from school
up to tea. I met Mrs. Stead on the tram and talked with her. I arrived home
with the girls at about 3 PM and we all talked in the drawing room while I
played the gramophone. They all enjoyed their tea I think as the cakes went
quick enough. After tea we all played clock golf and Amoret Allen was the
winner so daddy gave her a box of chocolates as a prize I took them back to
school.

I
went to fetch Nora for the week-end as usual.
