This blog contains the 1928 Diary of my mother, Iris Hunter and her sister Nora Hunter. At the time of it's writing, they were attending Bournemouth High School, a boarding school for girls in Bournemouth, England. It was their final year after which they would be returning to their home in Shanghai, China. Iris turned 17 in Feb of that year and her sister would be 16 in July. I've transcribed it as written along with any photos that were pasted into the diary. I've also added in a few photos

At 10:30 we all went to the hairdresser's. At 11:30 we went downtown. Iris bought a blouse. We met daddy later and went to the headland near the "Hotel Bristol" After lunch we went by bus to Mawgan.
We only had 1/2 hour there and thus did not have time to see much of the village.
2:30 p.m.
We walked via the R. Gannel to Crantock. The scenery was beautiful. On our way it began to rain but it soon cleared up again. We went into Crantock Church.
It was very quaint and worth seeing. The screen had a very fine line of figures on it carved in wood. There was an old font dating back to the 14th century and also an old stone coffin. In the churchyard on the N. side we saw a pair of stocks which had previously been used in the village. Crossed over by ferry.

Bank Holiday
Today was a very full day for us. We went to add in the hole this morning and found it disappointing. They charged us about a pound before we knew where we were. It was 3/6 entrance.
After tea, Nora and I had a single on the hard courts and later on we had a set with two other ladies.
Tonight we attended the large dance held here. We had a fine Orchestra playing for us so it helped and making our dance enjoyable. We had two "Paul Jones" and also a dance where the ladies had to ask the gentleman being leap year.
We danced every dance until 1 o'clock. We had refreshments at 11 o'clock. Daddy played bridge while we were at the dance. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and we're dead tired when we got to bed. The Houfes went back to Hull this morning.

9th After Trinity
We went into breakfast and met some very nice people
there at our table. A Mr. and Mrs. Houfe and their son and two other ladies. We
have an excellent waiter who just spins around us and is all attention to our
wants. The quickest and cleanest waiter I've ever seen. He is also the baths
assistant. We went for a bus ride round about here and enjoyed it thoroughly. At
3 PM we played tennis with Nora and Flo, our two ladies at our table. At supper
we had a good chat with the Houfes about Hull and various places of
interest.
After dinner we all attended the concert and
community singing. That ended at 10:15 and we didn't go to bed until 11 o'clock
because of our interesting talk at the bottom of the stairs.

War declared on Germany, 1914
S.R. 5.27, S.S. 8.43
We went to the Pump Gardens at Leamington spa to listen to the band. After tiffin we left for Matlock. Our first stop was at Coventry where we got into a very crowded train for Birmingham. At the Birmingham we had a long wait so we went to tea in the town. We looked at the shops, but unfortunately somewhere closed, it being Saturday afternoon. We had to wait a long time for the train to Derby. At Derby we had another long wait of and hour and a 3/4 giving us time to see the town by tram.
At last we arrived at Matlock and came
straight to the Hotel Chatsworth Hydro. We found a dance going on, so joined in
and danced until 11 o'clock. So every night so far, we've stayed up late.

*Note:
It was renamed Chatsworth Hydro, claiming in 1920 that it had "absolutely the finest position in Matlock" and in 1926 "The Cosiest of all Hydros" advertised suites to attract permanent residents]. Mr. and Mrs. Francis Taylor had been the owners for some years, with Mrs. Taylor acting as the manageress. Mr. Taylor had business interests in both Stockport and Manchester and when he died in 1928 it was said that he had been associated with Matlock Hydros for many years. His wife died less than two months later and Chatsworth was put up for auction, though did not sell immediately. By 1932 it was under both new ownership and management.

His wife died less than two months later and Chatsworth was put up for auction, though did not sell immediately. By 1932 it was under both new ownership and management.
Chatsworth continued as a hydro until the Second World War when
C&A Modes, a Manchester textile firm, took it over (although it was still
advertising as a hydro in Kelly's 1941 Directory). It reopened briefly as a
hydro post war but was bought by Derbyshire County Council, along with
Rockside, and a number of large houses in the vicinity. The sale was finalised
seven months after the Council had bought Rockside. They paid £17,000 for
Chatsworth. These buildings became the newly formed Matlock Teacher Training
College, a highly respected institution in the town. Unfortunately for Matlock,
the students moved to the Derby in 1988 when the Derby and Matlock Colleges
amalgamated.

3 Friday (216-150)
We spent this morning in shopping. We bought a pair of silver shoes each and Iris bought a sandal styled pair as well. After lunch we took the 2:15 bus for Stratford and arrived about 3:30. There was a fair on there. First we went to Anne Hathaway's cottage. We had to cross a field to get to it. The cottage was well preserved and very unique.
We ate our sandwiches on our return to Stratford. Then we had a nice each. Next we went to Holy Trinity Church and saw Shakespeare's burial place. His tomb was placed in the church thus showing he had some importance attached to him. Paid 6d entrance. Next saw grammar school from outside and went to River. Went for a trip 2 miles up river. Magnificent views. Swans tame. Had tea and cakes. Went to see "Midsummer Night's Dream". Wonderfully good. Scenery good. Returned 12 PM

2 Thursday (215-151)
The first thing we did this morning was to go to Randall's. Iris bought a pair of gray shoes. Then we took a "Red" Midlands bus and went Kenilsworth. From there we walk to the castle. On the way we had to cross a ford. It was fun! We paid 6d entrance fee and 2 /- for a guide. We saw the ruins of the castle but there was one part restored in which there were occupants.
There were three distinct types of architecture; Norman, Gothic and Tudor. The castle belonged to Lord Leicester, Elizabeth's favorite. Then we returned to our hotel. After tiffin we went by tram to Warwick and walked to Guy's Cliffe. Guy lived there as a hermit. We saw his cell and also an old Chapel built on rock. There was a figure of the giant Guy. We also visited stables, hewn out of the rock. Then we returned. We had tea at the "Pump Rooms. Then we went to Stratford and saw "Hamlet" it was wonderful he acted. Arrived back at 12 pm

Lammas Day (Scottish Quarter Day)
Full Moon. 4.31 p.m.
We went by tram to Warwick Castle. The walk up to the castle was very inviting. The castle and grounds were well-kept. A guide took us around. We saw the Armory Hall, Red Drawing Room, Green Drawing Room, Cedar Room and Queen Anne's State Room.
The rooms were very interesting. The Boule work was especially good. Each painting was lighted with an electric bulb. This was quite unique. We saw some good paintings by Rubens Raphael and VanDyk. Then we saw Guy's Porridge Pot. The view from the Blue Room was remarkable. We saw the fork of the Avon and a view of the old mill below and fields all round. Also saw the Warwick Vase. Then we saw St Mary's church and the Lord Leicester's Hospital Chapel. In the afternoon we went in a charabanc to Stratford-on-Avon and it rained. Had tea at River Café. Saw Shakespeare's birthplace, returned via Warwick at 6:30 PM. Went to see "It Pays to Advertise"

Had breakfast at 8:30 AM. More people at hotel this morning. Nora and I went shopping until 10 AM then we wrote a few letters went out for a short walk. We went to Euston station and caught the 11:30 AM train for Coventry, where we had to change for Leamington. There were a few passengers in the train. We tried for rooms at the Regent, but couldn't get rooms so we came to the Manor House Hotel, a historical sort of building and I think we have a very nice room here. After tea we went for a walk about Leamington and saw some very nice shops. We bought a doll hat to send to Mary. We enquired about a theater here also and about Charabanc drives. Had exactly the same dinner as last night only not half as good and for nearly twice the money.

8th after Trinity
We did a little packing after breakfast then went by tram to the square. From the square we walked up to show daddy our playing field, then we walked on to Winton. We arrived home just as it poured with the rain.
We finished all our packing after tiffin and then wrote letters. After tea we went for a short walk to the crossroads but it pelted with rain so we had to turn back. We leave tomorrow for London and then's on with our tour. Thrills!!!

We met her in the Square and she took us to her place. There were a party of nine there to T and we enjoyed ourselves immensely. We arrived home at about 730. It poured with rain all afternoon.

Today's a great day!! when Nora left school for good. She had one more exam and then after that came the breaking up for the holidays. Daddy and I went to fetch her and we said goodbye to some of the girls and Haskel. We then went up to Fullingers to see about my OG blazer and also to fit Nora with one. We had an early supper and went to see "Yellow Sands". We met Inez, Alwyn and Goodwin there as was arranged. We all enjoyed the show and it was certainly funny. Goodwin drove us all home and we had a light refreshment and talked, Goodwin played some jazz music on the piano. Inez and Alwyn leave for Jersey tomorrow so we won't see them again for sometime.

Belle went to a garden party with Mrs Kennedy and Daddy and I went on the top of the tram to Christchurch and down by the river there.
After supper we went round to Mrs Russell`s and she took us up to see her new house. It was very dark so we couldn't see much except the faint outline of the house.
It was beautifully cool walking on the cliffs this evening.

First Quarter, 3.38 p.m.
Daddy and I went shopping at Boscombe this morning to buy bathing caps. I couldn't get one to fit so I had to order one. Inez and Alwyn were to come up to bathe, but in the end they couldn't, but they did come to have Chinese dinner. They enjoyed the chow I believe. After dinner we danced out in the garden as it was so hot.
Belle's badminton set arrived today and we put it up. We three bathed this afternoon and the water was gloriously warm. We are arranged to meet the Cocks and a Goodwin on Thursday in the Theater Lougne. It's been a glorious fine day.

We had tea at St. George's and afterwards went to see the entertainment. It was a very good show and I think "A Visit to London, 1815" was the most amusing.
We looked over the cooking exhibition and all the things were already sold.
We went down to see Nelly Wallace in "Love and Money"
She was quite good but the show wasn't up to much.

18 Wednesday (200-166)
Went early this morning to fetch Inez out for the day. I arrived at St. George's in time to wish Nora a happy birthday before school. At 11 o'clock the Charabanc came to take us to Winchester. There were only three others in the car besides us, so it was rather a dull trip on the whole. We had tiffin at Dumper's Café at Winchester, the same place where we at tiffin in 1924. Went over the Cathedral. At Ramsey we went over the Abbey and had an ice at "Dumpers Café" there also. We had tea at Lyndhurst and then came home. Inez stayed for dinner and daddy and Belle took her back home afterwards. I went to bed early.

*Note: July 1928- Very sunny and rather warm with below average rainfall.
There was some changeable and rather cool weather during the early part of July. More than 16 mm of rain was recorded on the 3rd, and the maximum temperature on the 6th was only 18.2°C. During the second week it became largely dry, sunny and warm, and this summery spell of weather lasted, almost without interruption, until the last few days of the month. There was unbroken sunshine on both the 13th and 14th; and the temperature on the 15th exceeded 30°C.

We went to the 2 PM performance at the Electric Cinema. We saw "Broadway Madness" and "Service for Ladies" starring Adolphe Menjou. The whole program was really quite good. When we came out it was raining so we went into Bobby's for tea. We went to bed early after our strenuous day in Bournemouth.

Daddy and I went into attend the Christian Science service this morning at Boscombe. We went with Mrs. Apps (Mrs. Dry's sister) and we all enjoyed the service. The church was bright and cheerful and the service was very good indeed. When we got home the Labrum's had arrived. After tiffin we took them down on the beach for tea and we all had a ripping time. We took plenty of snaps on the beach. They were people Mrs. Nash knew in Hong Kong and quite a jolly couple with their boy "Dickie" Nora did her work this morning when we were at church. We saw the proprietress of Danecourt there, and also Mr. Davies, a friend of hers.

This morning Daddy, Nora and I, went shopping in Boscombe. We bought a lovely pink dance frock for Nora would she saw about a week ago. Daddy left us and we went on with our shopping while daddy went into Bournemouth. We bought a lot of things for Nora and myself. After tiffin we three went to see Bebe Daniels in "Señorita" It was a very good film and very thrilling. We certainly enjoyed it. We came back for tea at about 5:30. We bought a new record called my daddy so now we have about seven new records to take to Shanghai in September.
Daddy, Nora and I went into Boscombe after dinner to see "Hello There" at the "Hippodrome". It was a very funny movie and the house was full.

This afternoon I went to fetch Nora as usual for the weekend.
We had tea and then we had a chat for a while.
We had dinner then we rushed off to the Theater to see "Lord Babs" It was screamingly funny show and kept us all laughing although the story was a bit impossible in parts.
This morning I did some shopping in Fisherman's Walk and bought an artificial silk slip.

3rd after Trinity. St John Baptist.
Midsummer Day Quarter Day First Quarter 11:47 PM
I went to fetch Eunice out for the day at
about 12 PM as she was not allowed to come until church was over. After tiffin
we went for a charabanc drive to Swanage and Corfe Castle.
We did not stop at Corfe as we were a bit late. We had a ripping tea at the Trocadero for 1/3 each.
We met the Wrights there and were introduced to them by Belle. I took Eunice back and on my way to get the tram at the Square I met amah and Mary so we all came home together. We spent a long time chatting and playing the gramophone. I think Eunice enjoyed her day out

Waterloo, 1815
Got up early per usual to take Nora back to school. I received a letter from Mary Payton at school, and when I got home I got one from Mrs. Payton telling all her plans for August. We will probably spend our week near them at Lustleigh a place outside Torquay.
Made some jelly's this morning. Talked over holiday plans with daddy. Miss Preston, Mary's new nurse, came this afternoon and I took her down to show her the beach bungalow. She is a very nice girl and I quite enjoyed her company. We had our tea down there and came home at about 6 o'clock when Miss Preston be with Mary and put her to bed.
Daddy brought home several all of the books which we are studying up for these holidays. I went to bed very early after so many early mornings and late nights.

2nd after Trinity New moon 9:42 PM
.We all woke up at 7 o'clock and had breakfast at 7:30. The coach was to pick us up at 8:15, but it did not arrive until nearly 9 AM.
We went by "Charlie's Cars"
to Cheddar Caves, via Wells. We stopped at a little in for a cup of coffee at about 11 AM. We arrived at Wells in time to see the farmers clock strike 12 outside. After the service we went into the Cathedral. We had our own lunch with us so had it in the charabanc.
We visited the caves on arriving at Cheddar and we also bought a basket of lovely strawberries. We came home via Youvill and Sherbourne. The latter place we stopped at for 30 minutes to have tea at "The Three Wishes" a quaint tea place. We arrived home about 8 PM. The day wasn't particularly bright but still it didn't rain so we enjoyed our day thoroughly.

Nora stayed at home to do her work while the rest of us including Mary went for a morning charrabanc drive to see Bournemouth and it's surroundings. It was a very enjoyable trip and brought us back by 12:45. We did shopping in Fishermans walk on our way back. After tiffin Nora, daddy and I went for a long walk. We walked to Boscombe, then through the Chine Gardens until we reached the sea. We then walked along the promenade to Bournemouth. We went to Bobby's for tea. We had lovely banana splits. We watched some people playing cricket on the beach and also tennis in the B. Chine Gardens.
Belle went to a cricket match at Billy's school. After dinner we three went to see "Sorrows of Satan". I didn't like the show much as it was too slow and go for my liking. We bought a honeycomb today

I did shorthand this morning and daddy and Belle went shopping. After tiffin I got ready to go and fetch Nora. I took Mary with me to school and she thoroughly enjoyed herself with all the girls there. On our way home we bought some cakes at Bobby's. Mary fell asleep in my arms and I had to carry her home. We had dinner early then we went off to the theater to see "When Blue Hills Laughed". It wasn't a bad show but not as good as the others we've been seeing lately. It was quite amusing in parts and was better towards the end. We booked tickets for next weeks show called "Compromising Daphne". It is supposed to be very funny so I hope we will enjoy it

I got up rather late this morning. After breakfast I did some washing and then did about a half hour of shorthand. I also practice type-writing on Billy's machine. Belle wasn't feeling well today so daddy and I were on our own today. I read for a while and then played three games of clock golf with daddy. We stayed in again this evening as it was just beginning to rain at about 5:30 PM. The weather has been rotten all this week. I finished my book and thoroughly enjoyed it.

This morning daddy and Mrs. Nash went out shopping and I went out later to buy tea and fruit etc. I only could get an hour of shorthand this morning. I wrote to mummy and enclosed her draft and also wrote a note to Nora. We went to Christchurch this afternoon and looked over the priory.
We had tea at an old tea house which we went to in 1924 but it has changed altogether and the prices were shocking!!
We went to the Hippodrome to see "Lord Parker" it was screamingly funny and we all roared with laughter most of the evening. Charles Austin was a very good comedian. It was pouring with rain when we got out and we had to wait a long time for the Southbourne tram.

I did my shopping this morning and did a bit of typewriting. It was a funny sort of morning and threatening with rain. Belle bought a basket of lovely strawberries, which we had for tiffin. They were delicious and the first we had tasted this season. We went down on the beach for tea and had quite a nice time there. It was a bit windy when the sun went down so we came home quite early. Billy stayed at the cricket field for tea so didn't bother us, thank goodness. Belle played the piano till dinner. After dinner I played the gramophone till bedtime.

Saint Barnabas Last quarter 6:51 AM
We got up early and took Nora back to school. We arrived in very good time this Monday. After I left Nora, I ordered a pot of jam and some chocolate to be sent to her.
We had a very wet afternoon so did not go out at all. Miss Blanchard said she would send my dress up today or tomorrow, hope she keeps her promise. I did some shorthand for about an hour. Started reading one of the books Mrs Skeats lent me, it is called "Captain Desmond VC", a very good story. She sent me two other books which I'll read later.

We got up about 8:30 AM. We expected to daddy about 10 or 11 AM but he did not arrive until 6:30 PM.
In the morning we did some washing etc. Nora did some prep. In the afternoon we tidied our bedroom and did some ironing. After tea we played the grammie and then daddy arrived. We changed and hurried over our supper. We had "Curry". Delicious! We had arrived at the theater at 8:45. We met Mrs. Hill and saw Mr. and Mrs. Fox there. The play consisted of the "Drums of Oide" ( a play of 1 act ) also Gladys Cooper in "The Letter"
"The letter" was wonderfully good and we all swore we would see it again. We went down to the Square to wait for the tram. By some hook or crook Nora got left behind while the others went on the Fisherman's Walk tram. Daddy came back for Nora. We joined the others at Fisherman's Walk. We got back about 11:20 PM we received a postcard each from daddy.

Just as we were finishing the "Skeet crowd" turned up and so we prepared tea for them as well. They left us at about 6:30 PM. After supper we went to the Hippodrome and saw "The Joker". It was a detective story and had quite a plot to it. It was really quite thrilling. When we came out of the theater we discovered it had been raining. We arrive back at about 1130. We all enjoyed ourselves.

May 31 "Winton" "Hazeldene"
31 Thursday (152-214)
I went shopping with Daddy in Fisherman's Walk and after that we took the tram to "Winton". At Winton we had a look at "Hazeldene" again and also it's old familiar surroundings. We bought three awful pears at the fruit shop there and and also went into the cake shop to buy some cakes.
Mrs Nash went to the dentist and had a tooth out.
After tiffin I took Mary on the beach for tea and Daddy joined us later, It was lovely down there and very hot.
We heard from the German Steamship company and they can give us berths on the S.S. Saarbrucken, leaving Rottedam on Sept 8th. We are likely to go by this boat, but we are waiting to hear from N.Y.K. first before we decide.
I played the gramophone after dinner.

After dinner we three went for a walk along the Cliffs and back through Fishermans walk, where we listen to the band for a few minutes. Daddy wrote to Jersey about accommodation at one of the hotels there. He goes to Jersey this Monday if all is well. I hope to hear about the steamer tomorrow.

Nora and I got up at 6:45 AM and had breakfast at 7:15. We left for school at 7:40 AM and arrived at school in very good time 8:25 AM. Miss Haskell was quite shocked to see us so early. After seeing Nora into school I went to Miss Blanchard to give her my material. I chose some nice patterns so the dresses should be nice. After tiffin we all went into Bournemouth and I bought a new summer coat and hat. The coat is a light gray and quite pretty and so is the hat, though it's rather jazzy. Daddy went to try on his suit and Belle bought some new shoes. We booked seats for "The Letter" next Saturday after "Thark", as Gladys Cooper is the actress in it, so we mustn't miss seeing her.
I.H.
Her first play in sole charge, was to be another Somerset Maugham play called "The Letter" which, including a tour of the play, ran for sixty weeks and made a profit of forty thousand pounds from an initial investment of four hundred pounds. But this was a success Gladys would be unable to repeat as tougher times were ahead. During the production of "The Letter" Frank Curzon died.

This morning Nora, Belle and Daddy went for a walk towards Christchurch while I stayed at home to do my shorthand. After tiffin we all went down to the beach hut for tea. We spent the whole afternoon and evening there as it was such a fine day. There were crowds of people there being a bank holiday and Whit Monday and it was certainly ideal weather for everybody.
After supper we went the "Palladium" to see "Bohemian Love" It was quite a good show but rather sad in parts.
Nora had a slight sore throat when we got back, but we soon put it right again for her.

I got up early this morning and expected to get a train but there were none running until 10 o'clock so I had to walk to Boscombe where I caught the first tram out. Eunice was ready waiting for me. We came home and played clock golf with Eunice. We had ice cream from "Stop Me" and a little light refreshment. We had a swell tiffin especially for Eunice. After tiffin we went for charabanc drive to Larmar Tree
it is certainly one of the prettiest drives about here. We had tea in some lovely gardens there, and had a lovely time. We came back by Shaftsbury which brought us into picturesque hilly country. We arrived home at about 7:30 and talked with Eunice until dinner. After dinner daddy and Nora took Eunice back to school. I think Eunice had a fine treat today!! and so did all of us.

This morning Nora and daddy went to book tickets for
"Thark" and in the morning I did my shorthand. After tiffin we went
by the 2 PM train from Pokesdown to the New Milton. We found Mr. Wilson's house
about 15 minutes after arriving at New Milton. We then went for a walk to Hordle, 2 miles away and at about 5 PM we got back to Milton. We went into a
tea place called "The Corner House". It was quite a romantic place
but goodness me, the service was shocking. They had a boy serving and he was as
slow as a snail. In the end we didn't have time to have the cakes we ordered
and we ordered them about three hours before. Never again for that place. We
danced this evening after dinner and had a very lively time reaction of this
afternoon slowness!! round about us.

Easter Law Sittings end
Did shorthand for 1 1/2 hours and also helped with the housework. Before tiffin I got ready to go fetch Nora; that was about 12 o'clock. Brought back in time for tiffin.
We went onto the beach for tea and came back for early supper because daddy, Nora and I are going to see "Hit the Deck" We had good seats for the show and it was very good and quite the best we've seen while in Southbourne. It was 11 PM before we left the theater and and just in time to catch the last train. Today has been certainly full and very enjoyable too.

Empire Day
Had breakfast at 8:30 and afterwords did some unpacking of the old trunks and sorting out the things. I'm going to shorthand this afternoon and so learn to be quick at it by the time I get back to Shanghai, as practice must make perfect as the saying goes. Mrs. Nash is going to see "Hit the Deck" with matron and Mrs. Hill's, so daddy as I will go off to the cinema, as we must do something to. We are going to see "Silk Stockings." It's supposed to be very good so we will enjoy it. We received Nora's letter this morning and she sounds quite excited for tomorrow. I am to fetch her out in time for tiffin tomorrow and she won't have to return to school until Tuesday morning? being Whit-Sun weekend.

I made a cake and pudding after breakfast and then I did an hour of shorthand. Daddy and Mrs. Nash went into Bournemouth to buy cakes for this afternoon's tea party. After tiffin we got the house tidied up to receive our guests at 4 o'clock. Mrs Day Mrs. Russell and Mrs. Fortesque arrived. We talked by the fire then went in to tea. After tea we chatted about places abroad and showed them pictures of the places we visited this last trip. They ended up with cocktails, and they went home about 7:30 PM.. Well, it was a very enjoyable afternoon with such pleasant company.
After dinner we sat in the firelight and I played the gramophone until after 10 o'clock.

Heard from Mrs. Blanchard saying that she could make my summer dresses at 12/6 each, as I used to play when at school. Stayed at home and did some washing etc. and tidying the rooms. Heard from Mrs. Hawes inviting us to the on June 2 and for lunch too if I remember rightly.
Wrote to Nora and mummy this evening. After dinner we went off to the Hippodrome to see a revue named "The League of Neighbors", it was quite a good show and had some very clever feats in it. I haven't done shorthand for some days. Dreadful!!
I must "Pull up my Socks" and get a move on, soon, or I won't earn much of a living.

I received a letter from Cecil by the 11 o'clock post and it was a screaming letter in parts. We got up early this morning and took Nora back to school; we were in good time. I have arranged for Eunice to come out this Sunday and said I'd fetch her at 10 AM sharp. Did some shopping.
In the afternoon we went to the "Westover" to see "Crazy Maisy" and "Fools of Fortune" The first was decidedly the best and most amusing. We had a very long program, lasting from 2:30 to 6 PM and a very varied one too. After the show we went to the "Golden Gate" for tea. It wasn't up to much but still, it was about the only tea place open as late as 630. We didn't get home until well after 7:30 PM

Sunday after Ascension
Daddy and I went for a short walk in the morning and Nora did her prep. We booked for a Lulworth Cove Drive this afternoon as it looks such a fine day. We had a lovely drive but nearing Lulworth we got into a shower, but we escaped it by going to tea first before looking around the cove. We had the same 1/ teas that we could get when we were last here in 1924, and the place hasn't altered a bit. After tea we went up a hill and obtained a magnificent view of the Cove and the country around. The weather had quite cleared up again.

I brought some toffees for the girls in Nora's door. We went into Bobby's and bought some lovely cakes for tea then we both came home. We chatted after tea til Mrs. Nash came home. After supper we went to the Hippodrome to see Mrs. 'Arris, a comedy. It was a very funny show and well worth the money.

while Nora was collecting up her things. We ordered two cakes to be sent up to
Nora. She had to have gotten them by this afternoon, I think. We looked about the
shops until 10 and then we went to book seats for "Rookery Nook". It's supposed
to be a very funny play so I hope we will like it. I bought a tie for Cecil's
birthday also daddy went to the bank. It rained all the time we were out.

We stayed home in the morning, nor did her prep and I made a pudding and did various things about the house. We went to Salisbury and Stonehenge in the afternoon. The private car came for us at 2:30 and took us to Boscombe to meet the Charrabanc. We had tea at Salisbury and we went to visit the cathedral there too. After tea we drove to Stonehenge. We had a look at the stones and got into the Charrabanc to return the game. It was a chilly drive back. We saw Salisbury Plain and drove through some very pretty country in the valley of the Avon. We arrived home at 8 PM and had dinner. We talked for a few minutes after dinner and went to bed.

When Mrs. Nash arrived back at about 3:30 she suggested going to the Hippodrome tonight. We went to see "Contrasts" a sort of revue.
It was very funny indeed in the first time daddy has visited the Hippodrome. Nora and I have been before with the Cocks in 1926.

Stayed in this morning. This afternoon Mrs. Nash, daddy and I walked to Christchurch via Hengistbury Head and Mudeford. We did the same walk that Nora and I did with Mrs. Nash a long while ago. We crossed from Mudeford to Christchurch in a motorboat; it was freezing cold then, as the sun was in. We had tea at Christchurch in the tea shop there. We had a delicious tea of scones and meringues and cream. We came back by tram at about 6:30.
Mrs. Skeats came to call on us with her two children. We had a fire lit and sat beside it after dinner. We retired at about 10:30 PM

We were up quite early this morning as Billy had to return to school today. The house is quite quiet without that kid about and we are thankful too. Daddy and I went for a walk to Boscombe, of course studying the shops all the way. We had a look into the prices of seats at the Hippodrome as we may go next week and to see Mrs. 'Arris a funny show according to Mrs. Nash. We bought a lot of sweets and chocolate so that we can offer to company if they drop in on the us.

We missed the appointment so we went and had tea at Bobby's and after tea we went and had our photos taken by "Photomaton", the eight different positions of us were taken in 20 seconds and printed in eight minutes. It was quite fun and worth the 1/ in the slot for the experience of this new invention. We had dinner at 7:45 and rushed off to the Palladium to see the film "The Gay Retreat".
It was a very funny picture indeed. Well we certainly have had a busy day today and haven't idled much.

Well, Nora is back at school for another five days and I shall fetch her on Friday. At 11 o'clock we went over to look at Billy's school. The matron and miss today showed us around. It's a very nice school. We all went down to The beach bungalow for tea and we took down all the new crockery and utensils for the bungalow. It was lovely down there. Mary fell into the water and got sopping wet so Mrs.Nash had to return hurriedly. We played the gramophone after dinner till we retired to bed.

We walked along the sea front until the time was up. We got back at the Square at seven. Matron and Miss Day called on this when we got back so it delayed our supper until long after nine. We stayed up till after 10:30 as it was Nora's last night.

We stayed in this morning as it didn't look too inviting outside. I just went to buy some fruit at the Carbury stores and a few oddments. Mrs. Nash, daddy and I went into Bournemouth in the afternoon and we had tea at "Beale's" and had a Sunday each two. I had a "Pineapple Surprise", and it was a surprise to! There was nothing but pineapple in it. Mrs. Nash had a "Raspberry Temptation" and daddy had a "Beale's Special". I think that his was the best. I have now finished another book called the "Web of Toil" a most interesting and amusing book, though sad in parts. We have now been back a week in Southbourne.

We stayed in this morning as it didn't look too inviting outside. I just went to buy some fruit at the Carbury stores and a few oddments. S.S. Philip and James
Daddy and I went into Bournemouth to book tickets for that show called "The Silver Cord". We got very good seats in row 13 of the dress circle. The stalls for Saturday were all booked so it would be a good play. We all went down to the beach bungalow for tea. We forgot the knife to cut the cakes and bread so we had to eat in "picnic" fashion. Fine fun. We came back at 6:45 and I bathed the kids and put them to bed and also wrote a letter to cheer Nora up. We played the gramophone after dinner. Mrs Nash was reading and daddy writing to Nora. She ought to get our letters tomorrow mid-day I think.

April 30 "Phyllis's Wedding"
30 Monday (121-245)
Spent the morning buying tuck and various other articles for Nora to take back to school this evening. Had lunch early and rushed off to Phyllis's wedding in our new swish frocks. The wedding was at All Saints, Branksome and Phyllis certainly looked a charming bride. We went to the Branksome Tower Hotel for the reception and had a lovely time. Phyllis and her husband thanked us for our wedding presents. We sent the bride off to London and went back to the Hutton's house to see the wedding presents they certainly had a lovely lot of presents. Our entree dishes were the only pair they had so they were very pleased with them. We saw Nora back to school and chatted for a long time with Miss Haskell, and we nearly missed the last car back.

April 29
29 Sunday (120-246)
Third after Easter
We stayed at home all day as the weather was not too good. We just went for a short walk around to the old flat and that was all. We read our books and played with the children most of the day. We are now getting more settled into this new house and by the end of next week things will be in full swing again. Nora spent a little time doing a bit of packing for school tomorrow. Now that Nora will be at school for the next three months except for the weekends, I shall keep up this diary until she comes home for good.

April 27 "Nash move from Pinecliffe"
27 Friday (118-248)
We went into Bournemouth to buy Phyllis's wedding present. We bought two lovely silver entrée dishes which we hope she will like and Nora and I are giving her six silver spoons and Mrs. Nash bought a cut glass vase to give her. I stayed with the children in the afternoon and Nora went out with daddy and Mrs. Nash. We bought a little powder box which we are going to send to Hilda. Mrs. Nash has still a lot of moving to do yet. The trunks came over this evening from 12 Pinecliffe Avenue.

First Quarter 10.42 p.m.
Went over to the old flat for breakfast. Daddy stayed in to take care of the house while we both went shopping and also to school to get some things out. Daddy, Nora and Mrs. Nash went to buy a new bed, while I took Mary and Billy on the beach. Came back at 5:30 PM and arrive late 40. Mrs. Jones was with us for about half an hour as she joined us later. We played the gramophone and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. We all helped to get dinner ready. It is 10 o'clock now and everyone has retired except me. Amah went to the theater with Mrs. Jones tonight and I expect they are thoroughly enjoying themselves.

April 25 "Back in Bournemouth, at Clifton"
25 Wednesday (116-250)
S. Mark
Had breakfast at Lyon's and went to "True-Forms" and bought a lovely pair of shoes each. Then we went to several shops to try and get a two-piece for me and at the last moment got one from "C and A's" a very nice shop. We had to rush back to catch our train at 12:30 PM.
Had a good lunch on the train; arrived very punctual at B'mouth Central, and came straight to Clifton Bellevue Rd, our new address. Went down to the beach bungalow til near 7:30 PM. Returned to the old house for dinner. Had a very good time. Slept in the house without the Nash's as they will remain at Charford til all the things are moved over.

April 24 "London, Limehouse"
24 Tuesday (115-251)
Woke up quite late. Iris rang Hilda up and got her on
the phone. She came around to the Hotel Belgravia at about 10:30 AM and we
all went shopping. Mrs. Nash bought a lovely two-piece suit and a hat to match
and so did Nora. I could not have time to get any thing. Mrs Nash had to
catch the 12:30 PM train. We bought Hilda a flower button-hole and gave her 2/6 as a little gift. She had to leave us at 12 as she had to go back to
sleep being on night duty again. We had tiffin at the Waterloo Station and went
to the Limehouse and bought a lot of Chinese stuff.
Freeman's came to dinner and then after that we all went off to the Colosseum to see a variety show. Very good but not to compare with Paris. I think we made a swell evening for the Freeman's and ourselves. Went to bed after 12:30
PM.
